JOHN
COWART’S COLLECTION OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA,
HISTORY MATERIALS
As a writer of local history books and articles for newspapers and magazines, for over 35 years, I have collected materials related to the history of Jacksonville, Florida.
Each published article represents only the tip of an iceberg of research; but I have kept files of the original materials I gathered as well as books, microfilm printouts, clippings, photos, maps, ephemera, and physical artifacts.
The physical artifacts range from a collection of tee shirts related to Jacksonville events to coffee mugs sporting Jacksonville company logos.
Here following is a catalogue of this 35-year collection:
A Steel Four-Drawer File Cabinet
These
four steel drawers contain scores of files chock full of clippings,
pamphlets, notes, photos, microfilm printouts and research materials
related to Jacksonville’s history, events, businesses,
personalities, and events.
Here’s a photo of me looking at a file on Buffalo Bill. Yes, back in the early 1900s, Col. William Cody chose Jacksonville as winter headquarters for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show
And here, from that file, is a copy of a 1905 editorial cartoon:
Rusty Old Iron
My Great-Grandfather’s Shotgun
On the steel breech of this shotgun, the gunsmith engraved the date—May 14, 1901. That’s ten days after the Great Fire Of Jacksonville. Family legend has it that my Great-Grandfather “Papa” Barrs bought the shotgun to protect his property from looters. I do not know how or when the wooden stock got broken.
A Twisted, Fire-Melted Horse Shoe
When the alarm sounded at the start of the Great Fire, people threw belongings into wagons and fled. So many people fled that great traffic tangles developed. Many panicking peoples abandoned their wagons and ran on foot to escape the flames. Scores of horse teams, tangled in harness and hitch, burned to death. As the ashes of the city cooled and streets were cleared, workers drug the charred bodies of dead horses across Hogan Creek and buried them in a pit off Florida Avenue.
I found this partially melted horse shoe, with the nail heads visible, in an excavation at that site.
Toy Fire Horse
I dug up this rusty iron horse, under about three feet of dirt, while planting a tree near Buffalo Avenue in Panama Park. I imagine it once pulled some child’s toy fire engine.
Two Liquor Bottles
I uncovered these two liquor bottles in an excavation at Bay and Bridge streets—the site of Robert Bateman’s Central City Mission. Dr. Bateman, a Jacksonville minister active in rescue mission work, was the only Floridian to die in the sinking of the Titanic; his body was recovered from the north Atlantic and returned to Jacksonville for burial.
Notice the round bottom of the larger bottle; once you started drinking, you could not set the bottle down till it was empty.
Defused World War I Artillery Shell
Standing
nine inches tall and weighing 24 pounds, this defused World
War I shell was recovered from an old military firing range
near 8th Street and Tallyrand Avenue. It contains no
explosives.
An Ox Shoe
Before
motor cars came to Jacksonville, ox teams pulled heavy loads through
unpaved streets. They were the 18-Wheelers of yesteryear.
One reason the powerful animals could move loads of lumber to the mills and cargo to the docks was that oxen have cloven hooves; their toes spread wide under their weight and the animals do not bog down in sand or mud.
Therefore, oxen needed special steel shoes—one to protect each half-foot.
I found this ox shoe in an excavation for a footing of the Sky-way Express monorail on Bay Street where debris from the Great Fire had been used as fill.
The outline footprint shows how the steel shoe fit:

50 JACKSONVILLE TEE SHIRTS
Over the past three decades Jacksonville artists often expressed their talent for design by creating tee shirts featuring various aspects of the city’s culture.
As part of my mania for collecting Jacksonville historical materials I have amassed"http://Images dozens of such tee shirts.
They feature varied themes from boats at the Florida Yacht Club to the mighty air craft carriers Saratoga and Kennedy—200,000 Tons Of Diplomacy. Sports team shirts range from the long-defunct Jacksonville Bulls (football) to the Jacksonville Lizard Kings (hockey).
Organizations as diverse as HabiJax, building homes and the Cummer Museum Of Fine Art, business as diverse as Dave’s Dinner and LifeFlight Helicopter Rescue, events as diverse as scout hikes and Jacksonville Jazz Festivals—all in all, for over 30 years I’ve collected over 50 tee shirts representing the city in its varied aspects.
In preparing my whole collection of books, notes, clippings and historical artifacts for sale, yesterday we unpacked these tee shirts from their plastic containers, photographed them for the sale catalogue, fresh laundered them, ironed, refolded, and packed them away again—a massive amount of work.
These odd bits of ephemera depict my hometown as a city mighty as an army with banners…
Well, if not an army with banners, at least, if National Geographic ever came here for a photo shoot they’d get plenty of pictures of city residents sporting colorful native costumes.
No Florida Collection Would Be Complete Without….
……A pink neon flamingo and a large satellite photo of the state.
Note: This collection is for sale as a single lot unit only. Buyer assumes responsibility for shipping and insurance.
